Boxford 280

Hi.on a boxford 280 at the headstock the direction lever for the lead screw and the speed levers for the lead screw does the machine have to be turned off to change them?The powerfeed leavers on the apron does the motor have to be turned off to change them?

I would not be changing direction, or speeds, without the spindle at (or close to) stationary ( nor under power at the time). I always select the power feed mode before running the lathe, but engaging/disengaging is clearly carried out while the lathe is running. Not a Boxford, but the principle is the same.

Thanks for reply I have always stopped the machine but seen this guy doing it with the machine running and wondered what you guys thought?

Remember that on many machines the motor can be running but not driving anything – just like a car in neutral. Until you are clear about the full working of your Boxford it would be safer to stop the motor before waggling levers.
