      Here's a photo of the key.

      it is impossible to re-engage the quill incorrectly,(well, without employing the services of a 14lb sledge hammer).

      As Lee says, you engage the key in the keyway, then there is about 50mm of free travel to push the quill back until the lead screw engages. Any problems with the keyway/key would be apparent in that 50mm or so distance between engaging the key, and engaging the leadscrew.

      I do really think this may be a red herring, I am fairly sure (having looked at mine and partially dismantled it, and noting the scoring on Lee's quill); there is a foreign body trapped in the top of the quill/tailstock housing which is what is causing the jamming, and what caused the the scoring.

        Hi David

        If it is something stuck in there how would i best get the quill out… my guess is just hammer and bar from back

          I have a nasty suspicion you will have no other action.

          HOWEVER, be very careful – do not use a thin bar – in the back of the quill is the leadscrew nut, and it will be bronze/gunmetal or similar i.e. soft.

          If you have a piece of round brass bar a little less than the diameter of the tailstock bore, fine. If not what I would suggest is you go to your socket set, find a socket with an outside diameter just less than the bore of the tailstock, fit a long enough extension bar, and use this as a drift to knock it out. The socket will then impact on the quill itself, and not the nut.

          If you can stand the tailstock in the vice, in soft or lead jaws, on its end, tight enough in the jaws to support the casting but loose enough for the quill to slide through the jaws; even better, as all the driving force will be transferred to the quill.

          I am betting it will tap out quite easily.

                  Thanks for the photos.

                  Out of curiosity, does the scar go back as far as the oiler in the headstock casing?

                  And per our conversation earlier, once the scars clean up it shouldn't affect operation.

                  Did you manage to free off the screw thread so it doesn't now bind in the feed nut?

                      Sorry to be a pain, but can you post a picture of the screw out of the nut, and with the oil cleaned off?

                      To keep others in the loop, the quill is now out of the tailstock, but the feed screw is locking in the feed nut.

                      I suggested to Lee that he use a pick on the nut threads to clean out any swarf etc in the nut threads, but the feed screw still locks up solid in the nut after about 1".

                      The nut will not unscrew from the quill for further inspection (yes the grub screw was removed).

                      I can only assume that after force was initially used to try and wind the quill out, the feed nut or screw are damaged.

                          When i first read this thread, i looked on google and came across someone else with a similar problem of the nut being galled onto the screw. It doesnt say what type of boxford though and from looking at the diagram it looks like my southbend .

                              The brass thread looks clean and clear but hard to see the bottom of it as you know

                                Turns one and two of that thread look like they are burred over.

                                I believe that is an Acme thread form, in which the root and crest are parallel, and the angle is 29 degrees.

                                The start of the screw looks very suspicious, as none of the Acme thread form is rounded, it is all angular and sharp edged.

                                A photograph of the front end of the screw at a slight angle, and closer if possible, would confirm.

                                    It does.

                                    The edge of turn one doesn't really matter as it is the lead in, but whilst the back of turn two looks ok, it looks like the front of the thread has been pushed down into the the thread root.

                                    If that is the case, your best bet is probably to try and dress it out back to the correct thread form with a flat needle file (ideally one with a plain edge).

                                            Massive thanks to you all for contributing and massive thanks to David Standing for the extra mile and phone chat

                                            Eventually after trying my best to dress the thread it was still a little tight but thought I would put it back together so I could apply a little more pressure using the wheel and to my surprise the thread went though and is now running better than ever.. hope it remains that way
