I found these in a job lot of small lathe tooling I purchased, obviously they are for dividing but does anyone know what they actually fit? I suspect they are for a small lathe but are of no use to me. Thanks.

They could be for a cutter grinder. See this one and note the similarity of concept and scale:

              Agreed cutter grinder accessories.

Something functionally similar to the J&S device linked to by DC31K came with my Clarkson.

Nope. Dunno how you use them.

Thanks for the replies, they do indeed look like the cutter grinder ones.

The divisions stamped in them are:

                3, 13, 23, 33, 43, 53

                11, 21, 31, 41, 51

                9, 19, 29, 39, 49, 59

Whatever they are, something very similar has appeared on eBay:

I wonder if there is any connection between the originator of this thread and the eBay seller. We might consider the ethics of asking questions on a free forum to further one's own commercial interests.

Judging by the last photo, yes. I can't see any ethical problem myself – on here he was just asking for information.

I can't see a problem, Hollowpoint has been around the forum for a while & his commercial interests are hardly on the scale of Amazon.

That is me and if I have broken any rules I apologize. I do sell one or two bits and bobs on eBay to help fund my hobby.

I have never advertised any of the things I have for sale or posted any ebay links on here, in fact I have actively tried to avoid doing so. I would appreciate the link being removed please.

I'm sue at least half the "what's this" threads are so that people can get the right listing to stand a better chance of fining the right buyers. Don't have a problem with it but will remove the link as Hollowpoint has requested

I too do not see the problem. We get to solve a puzzle and the item is listed accurately which means some poor soul who is desperate to find the item gets lucky.

I bought something, via ebay, off a regular on here and trader where he hadn't asked what lathe it was for, obviously didn't know, and I wasn't going to tell him as it was already at the top of my price range. laugh

I like these 'what is it' puzzles as I often learn something. or feel chuffed at showing off my knowledge. It is a bit peeving to see something subsequently listed at a ridiculous price though. I know it is up to the purchaser to know the value to them but I sometime feat an overpriced item will be purchased as a present by a spouse or parent who can't really afford to be shafted.

+1 for not seeing any problem here – parts were identified as asked, and then put up for sale at a very reasonable starting price.

                                      Hi All,

As I am probably the number one offender here, if indeed it is an offence I felt I should comment.

I am always posting "what is this" type of threads and have never made any secret of the fact that I am an ebay seller.

My wife and I are registered on EBay as a business seller and also with HMRC to pay my taxes.

I never advertise my items on here and am always just trying to get info so that I can be accurate in my descriptions to avoid problems or disappointment to my buyers.

I really enjoy expanding my knowledge with the help of members on here and sometimes feel that I, too, can contribute rather than just benefiting from the communal knowledge.

I have sometimes wondered if I might be "pushing the envelope" a bit too far and am ready to be checked if this is the case?

I would love to hear comments on this.

                                      Cheers, Martin

Michael, Hmmmmmm, that's me put well in my place in the nicest possible way! blush

I did actually happen to talk to a top notch leather worker who told me that he used one to emboss a size mark on wet leather. He did say that the tool was not designed for that use but worked well.

I took that as being OK. I should have asked on here though should I not? wink

Have not heard back from the buyer yet….
