Yes, it will, 'Grab' at the slightest chance. Use a tapping compound or WD 40 and try not to make a full turn of the tap, turn until a resistance is felt and back off. Then turn again until it cuts again. Being ductile the chip is difficult to break off and most breakages occur on the back turn clearing of the chip.

              Good morning Fizzy ,

Unless you particularly want 8BA get a set of M2 or possibly M2.5 TiN coated HSS serial taps .

They not only cut very freely but the three taps used in turn only remove a tiny bit of metal each and breakage is much less likely .

Cetainly agree that an effective lubricant helps .

If buying anything specially get actual tapping compound .

If you definately want 8BA then use ordinary taps but check that each one is cutting freely and dress the cutting edges if nescessary .

              Regards ,

              Michael Williams .

I would try a fluteless tap

                Bert

I'd go with Bert, and use a Threadflo, or similar fluteless tap, Drill for a 65% thread depth. These taps are made for high speed power tapping, but they work ok at hand tapping speed, use oil, or normal cutting lub. Ian S C

I use Rocol RTD (stands for Reaming, Tapping, Drilling) compound for small sizes of tap. No problems found in copper with that.

                    Russell.
