Clock just passed midnight here in Oz.

So goodbye to a year many of us would prefer to forget and so best wishes for 2021.

        Regards from down-under.

Maybe we could go back to the old, pre 1752, calendar and start the fresh year on March 25 as the first months of 2021 look grim and the whole of the annus horriblis can be shunted back onto 2020 old style

                          Frances IoM –

You know what would happen if you proposed that too publicly – a chorus on Twitter of the types even less numerate than I, all accusing you of wanting to shorten their lives by three months!

(As when the odd quarter-day problem was finally solved by introducing the Leap Year, at a time when the artificial calendar had drifted well out of kilter with the natural one.)

Happy New Year One & All!

                            2021 versus 2020

A bit mixed here – firstly, no matter how bad (and 2020 has been bad) I have long made it a rule never to have regrets – After a close friend chose Edith Piaf's 'Non, je ne regrette rien' after she lost her fight with leukemia I have tried to follow her example.

2021 offers a retirement from a career I have enjoyed for more than 40 years, but on the other hand hopefully a healthier future supported by effective vaccines.

So may 2021 bring everyone (and your families & friends) here health, happiness and the chance to do as much model engineering as you wish.

May all your work be accurate, your soldered joints be sound and may you never break a tap!

But it is a totally artificial transition not even coinciding with the shortest day which would at least be logical.
2020 was a great year, 2021 can only be worse with more ecodestruction, the rabbit-like humans continuing to overpopulate and rushing around in their gas guzzlers between refrigerated office and overheated home.
On the plus side I hope to get my treadle operated lathe working just in case…..

Yep, Happy New Year to all. ‘’.21 should get better – we have likely at most 4 months to continue shielding in our household. I just fear for the NHS in the interim, as I hear more and more about the failure to follow the isolation rules by so many – that’s apart from what we read in the news.

My take on our overall death rate (from covid as opposed to failure to treat other things as well) is 3% but dropped to 2% currently with better approaches to therapy and assuming systems can cope. Vaccination arguments re only a single dose make maths difficult since the lower protection level and higher numbers protected will be confused by what R number that gives. In any event we have a history of failing to meet targets even if the vaccine availabilty improves.
I doubt we;ll be 'controlled; before autumn or even have 1/3rd of the population vaccinated and many of those 'wearing off'. My bigger concern is with what bug is going to test us next for a country with a poor bed ratio to population compared to most of europe and still claiming how wonderful the NHS is (thats no criticism of the front line workers)

It's presently about 3% for tested cases. It's certainly a fair bit lower in reality if you count the asymptomatic cases.

The tested cases figure of 2,54M is 4% of the population of about 67M.

Back in the summer the percentage of people with antibodies was 6%, so at least 4M had been exposed back then. We know that the antibodies figure can go down, so this means it's only a snapshot of recent exposure. You can easily extrapolate that a lot more than the 'known' 4% must have actually had it by now so that 3% is clearly an over-estimate.
