Hi All, info please of a very old, in brilliant condition, screw type telescopic i/d device. It seems to measure between 0.45 to 1″ with 7 incremental sets of 2 inserts. Zero to the 2 inserts size with the free rotating sleeve after setting to the proscribed inert size on the box and measure away. Made by an English company called Offen [sounds german or swiss] and can’t find really anything about them except that they also made precision unique vee blocks [ up to 1″ dia stock dia] They were based in Redhill, Surrey. No numbers only Prov  Patent on it with makers name. Any ideas? It is exceptionally made, very precise inserts with engaging teeth at 45 degrees and a convex tip. The Warrior rust inhibitor papers must be a distributors name?  Grateful for any info. Graeme. ps can’t seem to upload photos, will try to make them smaller.

          That’s a lovely instrument, Graeme

… I think Arthur Offen is your man:

Thank you, Michael G, you certainly know your way around finding patent numbers and long lost engineering tool makers, I  thank you for this information, a very interesting read.

This tool is so precise, as soon as you hold it in your hand, you know its something very special. Interestingly, the inserts have the tops with a slight curve for inside measuring, however the convex curve, unlike a total curve as with a normal micrometer it is only curved at 90 degrees to the locking angled cut out of the insert, this design would increase its accuracy. There was another one for larger holes on ebay, but didn’t bid for it. I wish that I had now. Bye for now. Graeme.

Hi Bernard, yes, a wonderful tool, congratulations. The slot in the box on the right should contain a small adjustment pin for the little hole in the dial. Yours should lay flat, wheras mine sticks up out of a small hole. Wonder how many sizes where made? Graeme.

No adjustment pin but I can adjust with fingers and it has been well used as the satin chrome is starting to wear off the adjustable part.

Mine works on a different principal  made by Coventry Tools, a Matrix Micro-Mag

it has 10 heads each with 3 measuring tips each has a range of 50 thou

a cone insert 10 of push the 3 tips out. Each has a range of 10 thou

total range is 0.5 to 1.048”

the thimble is graduated to 20 divisions per thou. ( wish my machine was accurate enough to achieve this!)

the extension tubes allow the boredom of holes up to 4” deep to be measured to use it the black sleeve  is pulled  towards the head which retracts the tips

good on holes, but  I can’t measure slots like yours!

Hello, this is an extremely precise hole measuring instrument. Ive thought of getting 3 anvil bore tools but far too expensive for my needs. good luck. Graeme.
