Hi, I’m building a 5 in loco, and I am at the stage of putting the boiler into the frames. I see from the drawings that the rear of the fire box end is supported with expansion mounts. But what is not clear to me is whether the boiler is sitting with the use of gravity or whether the fire box end is actually held down and able to expand and contract. Can some one help me with this please.

      Thanks

      Garry

Held down but free to slide to allow for expansion

Raises eyebrows at the drawing’s “Screws just touch boiler”.

If they do when cold the expansion will push hard on them. I’d be happier with a slight gap there to allow the firebox to expand in width.

LBSC (the designer) may have intended them to centralise the boiler in the frames, as well as hold it down, but the tips of the clips should do that by very lightly touching the vertical faces of the angles. Their shape and mode of fitting will allow them to spring slightly to cope with the lateral expansion.
