Advice please. I’m planning to make, or have somebody make a small casting for me. It’s for a small steam engine and Will need to be silver soldered into a small brass boiler, so I guess it will need to be bronze? What wood should I use for a pattern, is there a preference? In the past I’ve used lime for some detail carvining and fine finish. If bronze is the correct material what % should I allow for shrinkage?
      Thank

I made a wooden form for casting a bronze saddle on my loco. I allowed 1mm for shrinkage but in fact it came back bigger! I made sure that all the flat sides had a slope so that the form could be withdrawn from the mould easily.

I might add that it took nearly 4 months to get it back so make allowances for time. I would assume that the foundry would wait until they had several small parts to cast in one go before they start work.
