Under the heading , The Electronic Lead Screw X Axis: It states that the Z is parallel to the axis of the lathe spindle, the same as on a mill, and X runs at right angles to the axis of the lathe spindle. i.e. the cross slide. Is correct?

Yes, z axis positive direction is away from the chuck. X axis positive is towards the operator for a front tool post.

Think of lying your mill on its back, so the column (z) becomes like the bed of the lathe.

… and if you want to control movement in the Y axis, you need a vertical slide.

Ooh-er! I'm in trouble, my 2 axis dro for my lathe only has x and y axes.

Anyone seen a 2 axis dro with z axis plus one other?

Sticky Labels; Marker Pen; etc.

Lucky we are not robots having to calculate the tool path in multiple coordinate systems, back in the 80s this challenged the computing power of a robot and could have some odd effects.

And to muddy the waters even further when you swap from Absolute to Incremental the X, Y, Z changes to U, V, W
