For those of you with Talking Pictures channel, on 'Glimpses' tonight at 11.40 is a steam fair in the 60s at Darlington.

Bit late for me, might record it.

And today at 3.45 'Motor salesmanshio in the 1930s' visiting Hillman, Humber, Dunlop, Vauxhall and Austin factories.

Must keep more of an eye for these on this channel, some good stuff.

Not tonight but Friday afternoon 3.30 a doc from 1930 where someone fits an Austin car engine in a yacht and floats their way between Rye and the Lizzard. We have Sky so its channel 343.

Thanks to Bill Dawes for bringing this channel to our notice.

I wonder if modern day car salesmen (sorry people) have this sort of training.

Unfortunately Talking Pictures channel on freeview is not available in all areas.

Talking pictures channel is good if you like old movies, lots of British ones as well, the sort that has every actor you have ever known in them and of course the good old Ealing comedies.

I love these old docs. though, there we quite a few done that I remember, by organisations such as British Rail, Shell etc., be nice to see these again.

                  Reminiscing, must be getting old.

Didn't know Talking Pictures existed until I read the above. Must look in future – it's channel 343 on Sky.

I think it is channel 81 on freeview.

It is at the moment, but they're going to move at 13.45 today. The reason given is to extend coverage so more people should be able to receive it.

It's usually necessary to manually tell your TV / digital box to re-scan to find new channels from the Setup Menu. If you don't have TalkingPictures on Freeview at the moment, try retuning your set later this afternoon. It may suddenly appear.

Digital Channels are thoroughly confusing if you were brought up on analogue. They move about, disappear, pop-up, and don't follow a logical sequence. Better to rescan regularly and use the TV's Electronic Programme Guide rather than remember dozens of fluid channel numbers. Another example of modern technology making life complicated.

Thanks for that info SOD, I'll need to update an old lady friends' TV for her, being partially sighted she can't do a lot about freeview updates herself.

My thanks, too, for the CH81 tip.

I have never understood why these routine updates don't install automatically. As I understand it, it is necessary to update both TV and PVR if installed and to reinstate future programmed recordings.

I don't understand why the updates aren't automatic either. I've read that some sets are capable of self-retuning but there aren't any in my family.

Another counter-intuitive feature of digital channels is they're just labels, rather like a house name you might take with you when you move home. I retuned my Humax Fox PVR yesterday and found that TalkingPictures has moved from Channel 81 to Channel 81. Wot? Meanwhile, Channel 81 on my un-retuned TV set no longer gets TalkingPictures. It's not the same Channel 81! Confused? Argh

ITV 3 tonight at 11.00 p.m. An appropriate adult. The story of Fred and Rose West.

A bit gruesome but for you Drummond lathe enthusiasts there is a "guest" appearance by a Drummond round bed lathe ( about half way through ).

If you do tune in you won't believe where the guy is using it.

Down here in Kent, 'Talking Pictures' is broadcast quite regularly on KMTV, channel 8 Free view. Until hearing of this I'd watched channel 8 as frequently as I did the old BBC3 when it was on channel 8 – so never.
