New 2.5″ motor pulley

Hi I bought a 2.5″ motor pulley that I’ve now fitted. I knew the drive belt would be tighter but when I tension it it pulls the motor slightly up. I have only tried this once for about 20 seconds. The pulley does produce a faster speed but I’m worried it may damage the motor spindle.
Has anyone got experience of this?
Should I get a longer drive belt or maybe take a few links off the secondary drive belt so tension there is reached with less tension on the main drive belt. Or will he motor moving up not damage anything.

If you slacken off the motor base so the motor can move up and down, then just let the belt take the weight of the motor and tighten the base fittings at that setting the tension should be fine

There should be a little slack evident if you squeeze both sides of the belt between finger and thumb. If the belt slips at this setting, tighten it up a bit.

If the correct belt was fitted originally then its adjustment will easily cope with the larger pulley.

Thanks Robbie, thanks made it less of a strain. The motor still moves up a fraction but there is some slack in the belt now so I reckon it was designed for there to be a little movement from the motor base

A simple test for vee belt tension is to hold the belt between thumb and forefinger, now try to twist it through 90°.

If you can't then it is too tight.
