      Hi all,

I'm just in the process of rennovating a boxford Industrial lathe and have been looking around for the correct paint colour ( fern green I think).

I've used paragon paint in the past but they are expensive. I've had a quick search on the web and wondered if anyone has used these?

      Seem good value

      Cheers

Im not a good painter, but price is not the only criterium (singular?) to consider. Coverage, longevity, non-fade, thinners, finish quality, colour shade choice are likely the main comparators, but there will be others – even delivery or minimum order might make a difference.

I'm sure you will be aware of these, but your starting post may only get subjective, not comparative, replies from non -experts. So what are your important parameters, other than price?

I live in a semi rural area so agricultural merchants are not far away. Most stock "Tractol" paint for farm equipment. Reasonably priced and the machinery green (if still made) may be a close match for you. Good wear and oil resistance.

                Criterion

Thanks, Rick. Seems a bit greek to me! I think more of derivations from Latin, I suppose. Now back to the paint brush or sprayer.

My vote goes to Tractol range of paints.

Yes price wasn't really what I wanted to discuss but whether anyone had used their products and what they thought of them?

I'm wanting the specific colour and enamel paint that will do the job. As I stated I've used Paragon/craftmaster and thought the enamel paint o.k. although a little soft. I'm no painter only an amateur at best.

I've heard tractol mentioned a few times but as far as I'm aware they only have a set colour range.

Still plenty of rubbing down to do but whilst summer is here ( loosely stated!) I want to get the bare metal painted.

According to this web site (and others) Fern Green equates to RAL6025

This Company , (amongst others), supply Tractol to any RAL number, in aerosol or brush paint.

No connection with either company, but I have been using Tractol for years on old Landrovers.

Obviously since RAL numbers should be standard, pick your paint manufacturer and supplier , and specify the required RAL Number.

Any alkyd based synthetic enamel. I used to use it for vintage car chassis and it brushed and sprayed well, was oil resistant and hard wearing. Can't remember the brand name right now but any reputable brand should do.

Exact colour – does it really matter if you are going to use the lathe rather than display it devil

Paragon are very expensive, but I find it goes a long way and the finish (if you follow instructions) are superb and they last well.

I use teamac machibery enamel for my renovations. It’s an agricultural paint but is brilliant to work with and resilient. Quite a colour range and they supplied the original paints to Raglan.

I have just realised that I used some Tractol Landrover green about 6 weeks ago, So far it has not hardened off and will scratch off very easily. Nothing like as good as Paragon. You pays yer money and takes yer choice!

I have used this make of paint which so far it has been suitable for renovating all types of machinery. Its available from Brewers.

                                        teamac …

and they supplied the original paints to Raglan.

Not so, l think. Or perhaps for the Mk l machines? Trimite were the suppliers for most Raglan machines, as I understand it… Or maybe they are under the same ownership umbrella? Trimite do not appear interested in supplying small quantities to individuals.

                                        JS would likely know.

Dacrylate paints are just down the road from me and I have used their machinery paint for many years whilst at work and used on refurbing my lathe. Very durable and easy to use any colour can be mixed. Not in any way connected to them just a satisfied customers.

                                            Thanks for the suggestions guys.

In the end I've gone for paragon again as it was easy enough to work with last time. The difference after the dreaded VAT and shipping was £18 so not enough to warrant changing.

I'll see how I get on with it.
