At Bovingdon I have seen model tank clubs represented. This has stirred my interest and I wondered if there are many RC tank owners (Niel?) on here.

I was interested mostly in the active infra red combat competition, but there seems to be precious little information about that particular activity as opposed to semi static model displays. (at least in the south) Have contacted a couple of clubs but IR comps do not seem to be popular??

If any member could help. I am interested to dip my toe in!

You are more likely to find infra red combat systems fitted to the smaller 1/16 scale Tamiya plastic tanks sold by model shops and toy shops. The large 1/6 scale, all metal, tanks you would have seen at Bovington are made by a British company called Armortec. They cost between £5K and £10K on the road. I don't know of any which are used for 'battle system' games

              Hi Rod.
I have an Armortek centurion tank completed a couple of years ago. They are quite a piece of kit and it took me 3 years to build in kit form (obviously weekends and evenings not full time)
Armortek have changed hands and are just making their new kit but are keeping it secret till the launch. Models are sold as strict limited editions of 50 models so they are collectable and highly desirable.
Mine is rc with sound module so that it sounds as good as it looks.drop me a.line if you want to chat. I will post a couple of pics in my albums. Mick

There was a photo of a model tank in ME quite a few years back, it sported a 12g shotgun, "interesting".

I’ve seen several very nice RC Tanks at the model engineering shows. They look very good and were made largely from metal. Not cheap though.

I suppose you could look at the expense in relative terms. The initial purchase of the kit is quite high, but your paying for the machining time as it’s essentially a construction kit which just requires building. I put a lot more detail on my model, machining and fabricating extra items to enhance the basic kit. So it can become more of an engineering exercise.
Imagine making a similar model from scratch, machining each part, the cost would soon surpass that of a kit model.
The IR side of the hobby is relatively new but there are suppliers of 1/10 scale metal tanks for this purpose.
Not as impressive as 1/6scale but still good fun.

Thank you gentlemen. I am looking, at the moment, at 1/16 scale with infra red. Still cannot find much on I.R. competitive use but following a couple of leads next week.

I think this is the one I’ve seen.

Armortek are 1/6 scale not 1/16 so end up about 4 feet long and mine weighs in at 18 stones. Green flag call out if it breaks down lol.

Yes that’s right, they are quite large. I seem to remember reading the Russians military have something similar and the gun is real and fires .22 LR.

Here is a video of my 1/6 scale STUG 111, a German anti-tank self-propelled gun.

You will need to cut and paste the address into your browser

The gun uses 50 cal cartridge cases. The gun made to be incapable for firing live rounds or blanks,(Home Office Rules) so the simulated firing is achieved with compressed air (or CO2) and a small quantity of baby talcum powder. It smalls sweeter than cordite. The recoil and recuperation are also powered by the compressed air supply

I saw this beauty at Alexandra Palace a few years ago, owner brought it over from Australia! Not in hand luggage that’s for sure!

Powered by a V12 OHC Engine, it is called the Wimmera Tiger. Google it.40214e70-12d4-4fd4-98c4-2122215c78e2.jpeg

Its the Wimmera Tiger built by Gerard Dean ( 1/5 scale PZKW VI Tiger Tank Ausf E ) approx 10 yrs to build and you can read the story of his build in the book Der Tiger  – this is not a book of plans to build it  but i found it an interesting read anyhow .

To see a model Tiger tank in action get hold of a copy of a film called JACKBOOTS on WHITEHALL.
