Hi everyone,

Would any members of this forum happen to have a spare set of pressed hornblocks like the ones which used to be obtainable front A J Reeves? I far prefer these to castings and currently have 2, but require another 2 to complete. If anyone can help you will honestly be a lifesaver!

Hi Roy,

Many apologies, I thought these were standard across many 3 1/2" gauge locos. The hornblocks required are for an LBSC Tich.

Hi Tom;

I know what product you are referring to – I used these when building my Tich. No, I don't have any more!

I did read somewhere where they were made of soft material that wore quickly. Maybe not the best choice?

The normal cast hornblocks (which I've used in my soon-to-be-completed 3-1/2" gauge 2-6-0) seem fine and took just a little bit more machining (for the "bolting face", I just used the pressed ones as-is, as I remember it).

Tom,

If you haven't already cut the horn slots, have you considered simply using a simple bright mild steel strip (say 1 1/2" wide by 1/4" thick). Rivet the short strip sections in place and cut the axlebox slot through the frame and plate horn in one go.

I have just machined my Rob Roy cast gunmetal horns and riveted them into position. I will never use cast or pressed horns ever again – what a faff for no real gain. You can hardly see the little cast or pressed webs when the engine is finished and its a good job because the 3/32" snap head rivets look ridiculously off scale anyway.
