I need a short length of 1/16 inch square silver steel for a clock project. Tried all my usual sources without success. Anyone know where to get some?

Mike, I think this is hard to find, I only know of round.

You might want to try gauge plate as this ground flat, high carbon, harden-able stock.

MSC Industrial do 1/8th but not 1/16.

            link

You might have to buy 1/16 gauge plate, saw out a length, and file/mill to size.

Mike, you can get 1/16" square key steel, this is really tough, but not sure of the hardening process. It's normally nominal size plus. RoyM

                  Hi Mike

What is it for and do you it need to heat treat it. If you don't live to far from (Nottinghamshire) me I have some 1/16 by 2" wide gauge plate which is the equivalent spec to silver steel and what length do you need. Send me a message if any good.

                  David

College engineering stock some square but unfortunately not as small as 1/16 http://www.collegeengineering.co.uk/product/imperial-13-long/ Might be worth a phone call to see if they know a supplier.

Thanks for all the replies. It looks like I!'s probably not available. At least not in the very small quantity I need at a sensible price. I need it for a maintaining spring in a clock barrel. What matters is stiffness after hardening. Doing some sums just now it looks as though a round section would need to be about 20% greater in diameter than the side dimension of a square bar for the same stiffness. So substituting a round bar for the 1/16 square bar would means I would need a round bar 0.075 diameter. This is pretty close to 2mm, which is readily available size. So I'll go with that.

                          Hi Mike,

I have plenty of 1/8" square silver steel. I cant see me needing much of it for any future projects.

I can send you whatever length you need.

You can then mill or file it down to size.

PM me if you want some.

                          Cheers,

                          Julian

Does McMaster Carr serve the UK? They have it in keystock, W1 tool steel, 1095 spring temper, Stainless, and more.

Why not file down a bit of round rod to suit ?

I think I may have a bit of 1/16 SS – I'll be able to check later, what length do you need ? is it for pallets?

                                    Neil,

It's a spring for a Harrison maintaining mechanism on the barrel of a long case clock. I need a piece about 90 mm long.
