I was going to have a go using a compressor from a Turbocharger from an EMD Deisel but given that it was about 10" diameter I think it would have resulted in something, had it been successful, with so much power that the test bench would have become airborne as soon as it started.

There are some good books on the subject and as Mike says, log into the GTBA website and you should find plenty of good ideas and designs there.

No, but I did make a Brauner pulse jet (plan in the Aeromodeller Mag in the late 50`s) when I was an apprentice. We fired it up outside the training centre one lunchtime ye gods was it noisy. Quickly shut it down as it was noisier than the Seahawk (RR Nene) we had been running up earlier. Even the MoD plods came looking for the source of the noise!

Still got the plans but not the engine some b*****d nicked it.

There as a article in ME a few years back by a German who's name starts with S, his engine used centrifugal compressor made of ply wood.

The Christchurch model aircraft club had a fly in at there air strip over the past week end, and a number of gas turbine aircraft took part. This is a photo from last year's meet.

I am always impressed by some of the special tools made by turbine builders, especially the tiny spot-welders used for stainless steel and the balancing rigs.

If anyone (John?) fancies writing up some of these tools… let me know!
