I have a "new" Moore and Wright 902 distance piece. Two questions:

What is it used for? Can anybody make use of it for the cost of a stamp?

It was priced at 9/6d in 1971 so must be worth something to someone……..

Hi Bob, M&R's older type of internal micrometers have what they term as a distance piece. As the bodies are only short, 1/4" or 1/2" screw movement, the rods can be fitted with or without the distance piece, which is a small tube exactly 1/4" or 1/2" long (6.5 or 12.5mm for metric mics) thus extending each rod to get all sizes from the lowest to the highest in the range.

The hole in your photo suggest that it may be for a similar thing and you may find the width where it is along the length of the hole, is 1/2" or 12.5mm, but I don't know why it is the shape it is, or what the slots might be for.

          Regards Nick.

According to their catalogue M&W item 902 is an internal micrometer set . Among items in the set is a distance piece but part shown doesn't look like the one in your picture .

Later version or perhaps wrong box .

Hi, yes Michael is correct, 902 is an internal set, with a capacity of 2" to 8" and as he says, maybe in the wrong box.

              Regards Nick.

Thanks for the replies. I got it thrown in with some other stuff from the local tool shop for free so there is no great loss – I was merely curious as to what it could be. I always thought the box was quite large for it but of course it never occured to me (dumbo) that it was in the wrong box!

Nick – the thickness where the hole goes through is just under 3/8". The 1/2" measurement is along the length of the slots.

The offer is still there if anyone can use it.

                Thanks again, Bob
