How were members supposed to know if it was a serious comment or not .

        .

Perhaps by the absence or presence of an appropriate smiley thing to indicate ‘not serious’

If I was going to tell lies, they'd be a lot more interesting than that.

            Well, convince ebay then.

If enough of you do,you may succeed where I have failed.

Sounds as if enough proof exsists to me.

How are you contacting ebay? I can only highlight the item to them and pick from a drop down menu that I suspect the item is fruadulent. If I could point out to them why I thought it was fraudulent I think I would be more successful. I've definately done this in the past but can't remember how I did it. Thanks.

I used the ‘report this item’ at the bottom of the item posting, but only had some drop down box selections to pick from. I had already noted the I’d number of the sold item that the photos were from, but there was no way to pass this to ebay.

I can only conclude that they have no interest in stopping scams.

About three years ago, I noticed somebody selling an item which was radioactive without mentioning that fact to any potential buyer. Complaining to ebay got nowhere and all I got from the seller was abuse and told to mind my own business.

It would be better to win the auction, get the sellers bank info, then report to the police.

                    I might have a bid.

15 minutes ago I bid on this, the seller has just blocked me and removed my bids, there's a pretty good chance he's reading this forum.

The only way to stop these scams is to use a bid sniping tool (to stop bids being cancelled) and refuse to pay.

Ebay don't care, and cannot police it anyway.

I have Moto Guzzi motorbikes and regularly browse ebay for parts. Someone tries the same scamming techniques here and has 1000's of listing of rare, strange, unusual vehicles put up regularly.

It must be a full time job.

I noticed that CNC unit when I did a "nearest first" search and thought -what the heck is someone away over there doing with one of those?-

But you do get genuine unusual stuff up here, my Acorn shaper came down from further up North and there is quite a lot of stuff still around the Glasgow area from bygone years

It's not hard to kill off these things, I recall some nazi stuff being bid up past 500,000 on the ebay system by protestors who had no intention of paying up

looks like he's now traded in his emco for a boxford…lol

I have found this forum after googling scam sellers of model engineering stuff.

So I joined to tell you I was a victim of this con man a few months ago. He is very polite and appears to be a "very nice chap", all through the transaction. Please don't bother telling me I was stupid ect. I already know that.

The trouble is I reported it to Action Fraud, they said I should have used Paypal. I reported it to my bank, they said I was negligent. I reported it to ebay, they didn't even reply to me. This is even after providing bank account details, names etc. So you really are on your own and these people have virtual immunity to prosecution.

Message me if you want his details.

                                    Please learn from my stupidity.

Dunoon – a good choice for him – I think you have to take a ferry from Greenock to get there. Unlikely anyone will come and view – unless in the mood for an adventure.
Meanwhile, I think, anyone who buys a lathe without seeing it, AND pays with cash by bank transfer before collecting would be trying hard to be screwed. I did say I THINK.

Interesting and precautionary thread. Once one looks carefully at the different elements of the advert one can see how cunningly the scam works, though without this thread I would not have noticed the trap.

I wonder if he/ she really lives in Dunoon or chose to represent him/ herself as being based there because it is so remote?

I do buy things off Ebay but only low value things and, so far, I have not been stung, perhaps it's not worth the effort for scammers to bother with small items.

I am surprised that eBay has not taken action because they have a reputation for taking the buyer's side in most disputes, which suggests they are keen to protect their overall reputation for running an honest market.

I notice the lathe is on sale again with a single £400.00 bid.

Hi, well I don't use ebay much these days, but when in the past I've bought such thing's to collect, I was only interested in anything that would accept cash on collection, that way you can always walk away if it wasn't what was described, and yes I bought my Boxford from Glasgow without viewing it first, 6 hours there and 6 hours back but the price made it worth it at the time, but that was nearly 20 years ago when there wasn't as much scamming going on. Not likely to buy much machinery now off ebay.

                                                Regards Nick.

P.S. never got unlucky with anything that I collected.
