I dare say like many I used to use the Yahoo groups a lot for some of the varied interests I have.

Since they went over to the new Neo format some while ago things have gone from bad to worse.

Even worse if you 'own' a group or two as I do. It make you have to jump thru hoops to approve new members etc but it was workable – just.

Recently I have found that I can open the main groups page easily enough but that's it. If I click on a post then I get the circling sharks and nothing else. I use firefox but tried IE and Chrome, same on both.

Add to this the reported Yahoo problems and I feel it's time to get a couple of the more popular groups off Yahoo and onto a dedicated forum, possibly under the Homeworkshop umbrella but separate from it.

However fisrt I need to get back on the save files and photo's. Any ideas and is anyone else having problems with Yahoo groups.

Please keep on topic, not interested if you worked for Google back in 1948 or even who you used to program for.

I did make the odd visit and post on the Myford lathes group but have not been there recently. There was quite a bit of useful info. there ( although not at all Mac friendly!) . It would be a pity to lose this resource so if you can work some magic and get the info. to another place I, and I'm sure many other Myford owners, would be very grateful.

          Here's hoping!

Are you using a Yahoo E-mail address to interact with the groups? I moderate the Bridgeport mill group and had some problems which went away when I switched to a Yahoo E-Mail address from the old BT talk21 one that I originally signed up with. The talk21 addresses were run by Yahoo for some time, thought they still were, but looks as if something has changed.

Changing to Yahoo E-Mail addresses also appears to cure sporadic issues with long term members being locked out and new mebers being unable to join up. There also appears to be an issue with membership status of very long term users. Commonest one on I see is that users can see daily digest E-Mails but cannot reply or get into the group via the web page. Despite being moderator I can no longer find their details. Neo doesn't always recognise status flags or whatever set by the original sign up system and possibly its replacement. I gather its been changed several times over the years.

Definitely time for an exit strategy. I'm surprised the groups have been held together so long as there is no obvious way of making money from them. Fortunately our type of group are, relatively, small so migration looks doable. Some of the fluff'n dust ones are huge and must be expensive for Yahoo to support.

There's certainly something odd going on with them.

3 times recently I've had issue with DWmill refusing to recognise my membership. When I've re-registered, I get a refusal, but regain access.

I've even had unsolicited emails from groups saying my application has been turned down, although I'm a working registered member of the relevant group. frown

Centec Milling, also refused my log–on a couple of days ago, and whilst I was looking around to see what was happening Quorn seems to have ejected me too.

Screen refresh/change of topic are sometimes virtually instantaneous, but but sometimes I get the cream "loading" box for 1/2- 2 minutes at a time.

I am a moderator on one of the Yahoo groups that doesn't have too much traffic. I agree since the changes were made the site does not function as well as with the older system. I haven't experienced difficulty in changing member status for posting and receiving mail etc. My biggest difficulty is viewing pictures in the Photo section, before you viewed 1 album at a time, now they are all loading at the same time and this makes the screen a muddle and difficult to view exactly what you want.

My biggest problem is nearly every visit my computer freezes, ctl-alt-del brings me back to screen choices. I am using Vista and Firefox.

Gave up completely on Yahoo soon after the NEO debacle.

Also deleted all of my email accounts as they where regularly being hacked.

That new CEO has killed the Groups.

**LINK** has been started by the original creator of ONElist/eGroups, that was acquired by Yahoo in 2000 and built into THE newsgroups centre for millions, but now destroyed.

Trouble is many of the Yahoo Groups that fled, when Meyer destroyed them, didn't have an alternative to head for, so are now all over the net and difficult to find.

Makes me wonder how a CEO can be that STUPID❓😡

It's been over a year now since I bothered to look at any of the 30odd I joined.

Move all of them John before they either disappear or are unable to access YOUR information.

Geoff – Yahoo is history as far as I'm concerned.

I've accessed the 626 group from time to time but the software is pretty antiquated IMO. I get the impression it's designed for DOS users.

I subscribe to three groups, but rarely use Yahoo as it has become so slow and difficult – almost unusable on an iPad. Navigating between messages seems to cause the whole page to reload, so easy to lose where you'd got to down the list. Handling of photos is ridiculous.

I'd be very happy if the Boxford and Harrison groups moved to a decent forum, but I think the main problem is that there seems to be no way of archiving and transferring all the Yahoo messages, photos and files.

                        Hi,

I'm running Ubuntu on a dual-boot laptop which enables me to boot in either Ubuntu or Windows (8.1). I tend to use Ubuntu for email and most of my browsing, using Firefox. Over the past couple of weeks, I found access to the Yahoo fora almost impossible, but seem to have sorted it out now.

I got a clue to the potential problem when I booted in Windows and logged in to Yahoo from there. I was greeted with a massive advert which wouldn't go away, though once I finally managed to delete it, I could more or less get around the two fora I'm a member of.

Today, I added "Ublock origin" to my Ubuntu Firefox, as an addin and with no setting up found that when I logged back into Yahoo groups, all seemed pretty much back to normal. I'm sure the ad blocker will cause some problems further down the line, however, for now at least, it seems to have sorted the Yahoo Groups problem.

Hope this helps some of the others who have posted here.

                        Regards Tom

I expect a lot of this is down to some thrusting Mercan MBA's whizzo idea to "monetise" parts of the business.

Doesn't seem to be working, financially at least. Yahoo continues its relentless slide down the pan although as often seems to be the case, the CEO can't lose. $59M payoff for screwing up? Nice "work" if you can get it!

it sorted itself out for me but only after I had visited another yahoo page and then the problem quickly returned.

There is a link on the group pages bottom left – feedback – so I posted a bug using it as I am pretty sure that's what it is. They have been know to read these in the past but it helps if people go to the page and vote for things. Easy to do an that page for some reason might come up more quickly.

Just add one thing about people who don't like the format of yahoo groups, move it etc. I wonder if they know just how many groups there are in active use ? People are just inclined to think about the one or two they use when there is huge amount of information buried in them on all sorts of things.

                            John

                              That worked for me perfectly.

After having this problem for over a month it's the onlt advise that has worked so tank you very much Tom.

I already had adblock plus installed and tried switching it on and switching it off with no effect.

Just heard that Yahoo is up for sale after massive losses, Google reins supreme after beating Apple for the #1 U.S. company position.

Melissa Meyer admitted that they might have a problem – now that's got to be the understatement of the year!

One commentator said "That's what happens when you let a programmer run a company" – Well at least she should have a nice nest egg by now. Sadly, there is no compensation for the user groups who helped build the company before they had the rug pulled out from under them.

                                        UPDATE:

I have just installed Firefox on the iPad

Yes, 'Yahoo Groups' is better on this than anything else I have yet tried.

There is no log-on link visible on the Groups page; but after logging-in via the eMail page, my Groups are accessible.

The first couple of pages loaded quite promptly, and I thought we were winning; but then everything slowed to a crawl. … Memory leakage, or just a bloated product?

People seem to have a variety of problems that perhaps depend on the detailed configuration of their computer, and perhaps sometimes actual iste faults that might have gone away if you try again a month later.

The problem I have had is that in IE every time the advert changed the view or list of posts flipped back up to the top. Moving to Chrome solved this. I've not had a problem logging in, or staying logged in unlike this site.

Put the "uBlock origin" add on into Firefox, and the drummondlathe group is now working more or less correctly (had to log-in afresh) after being unusable for a couple of months. Playing around in the "Files" section is still a bit sticky.

Running an imac with both Firefox and Safari installed.

I haven't used any of the yahoo group sites for months. They'd hang before the group photo and adds appeared. These generally came up many mins later.

No idea why I did but I just checked the dns servers in my router. All seems ok but I changed them via a check of the ones that my isp provides and also selected not to pick these up automatically. The pages load fine now. They didn't half an hour ago.

Leaves me being a bit annoyed with myself as dns hijacking has been going on for a very very long time and I knew that. I had been using a public dns service as it was faster – for a while but when I switched back to the isp ones I didn't bother putting the addresses in myself.

                                                      .

I suspect that the Yahoo Groups will 'sink or swim' according to their potential as an adverising channel.
