Worth Rescuing?

Anyone ID what this roller is used for. It’s in good condition but seized.

The closest I could go would be to put the set in a large bandsaw blade but you would never get a closed loop in or out. The top roller does not seem to be de-mountable ( is that a word). Maybe conveyer belt belting to generate a cupped bias.?

The only time/place I hae seen anything like that was at the Boosey & Hawkes factory where they used a very similar tool to carry out the initial shaping on the blanks for brass musical instrument bell sections,……..the flat sheet is cut out along a template and the 'blank' passed thru the rollers to impart a curved channel section. The edges are then closed and brazed and then wooden formers are used to quite litterally 'bash' to the final shape.

Top roller is iron. Bottom looks to be ally but poss either copper plated . . . or used to roll copper. I’m stumped. No makers name anywhere.

First thought that came to my head was a roller to shape roofing valleys. Likely a million miles off the real use!

Wow, what are the chances of that???

What exactly would one make out of rolled leather? I always thought of leather as flexible enough to curve by hand. Obviously I'm wrong but just wondering how it all works.

Looks like a proper antique tool, well worth saving in my book.

I use colloidal graphite to free stuff up, others in here also have decent alternative systems

I find rhubarb is pretty effective for loosening things up.

Hide when turned into leather through tanning is much thicker before its rolled scraped or stretched to size. So its part of the making process

Cheers. I knew you lot wouldn't fail.

I'm not interested in it myself but I've asked them to put it to one side for a few weeks in case anyone does. I can't see it being much value in a 'man cave' or shabby chic setting but there has to be someone out there that could find a new home for it.

It's located at the Household Waste & Recycling site in Darley Dale nr Matlock Derby's.

Leather is often worked or rolled wet and takes a 'set' and becomes hard when dried out. Bit like me…..

I'd have that to restore Mick, if they're not asking much more than scrap for it – time has gone when you could turn up at the tip and take stuff away for free. No particular need to roll leather, but it looks too nice a bit of machinery to be consigned to the furnace. Any idea what they want? I'm in Matlock area too.

Pop down & ask 'em.

It's been put to one side but it'll get chucked in a bin or end up with a dealer eventually.

They have no idea what it was used for & I reckon negotiations should start at £10. It really does look like a nice bit of kit, obviously manufactured but no makers mark anywhere.

No makers mark here either, had a look at Google last night, and about all I could get was roller skates, but I'm sure there is something on line that I identified it a couple of years ago.
