I am working my way through all the drawings in preperation to start to build a Willam in 3-1/2″. I am working from the book rather than drawings. Probably dangerous, but i am drawing them up in 3d which has shown the problem.

 

I have found that the axle length is given as 3-9/32″ on the parallel and 15/32″ on the step for the wheel to fit on. this makes them short!!

 

I have tried adjusting the length but this could end up wrong, so any info would be appreciated.

 

 

Has anyone got the correct length?

 

There was a recent article on a William, but i can not find it to contact the builder.

Brian, The original William article in ME (1983 p398) shows the axle lengths of 3 9/32 for the centre section and 15/32 for the wheel seats as you described. The 3 9/32 dimension is the “back-to-back” dimension (3.281) as listed in the published wheel standards table for 3 1/2 gauge. The tyre width in the ME article is article is 13/32 (3/8 in the standard) but the overall thickness of the wheels is 15/32 which compares with your wheel seat of 15/32.

 

 

I can’t see any problem with your book dimensions.
