Which 5″ gauge loco

Hi,

I Have just about completed a Stuart Steam No9 engine and I’m now looking forward to a future project. I’m considering a big leap to a 5″ gauge loco. I have in mind the following examples.

Reeves 2000. “Jill”, “Pansy” or “Speedy”

GLR. “Pansy” or “Tich” has anybody built any of these as a first build or should I look at other options. A book to explain the building process would be a help during construction of the final choise.

Any assistance would be greatfully received.

Speedy has its own construction manual – search for ‘Building Speedy’, I don’t know if any of the others do.

Another to consider for your list is the LBSCR Terrier ‘Boxhill’ which is what I am planning for my first loco.

One question to ask is … Are you happy about building totally from a drawing? or do you need some construction notes, manual etc?

 

Also take a look at Blackgates, they do the Drawing’s & etchings/castings.

 

If the latter then you should choose a loco that has a set of construction notes published in either book form or serialized in one of the magazines.

 

Also do you prefer Standard, Narrow Gauge, UK or Oversea’s

 

Also do you have any railway interests? It is better to build a loco that you like or have a soft spot for.

 

A lot of questions … but you need to make the right choice, or you will just not finish it.

 

When I made my choice, I did not want to work totally from drawings, and I like Dougal from the Welshpool & Llanfair loco’s (Reeves Drawings), Darjeeling ‘B’ Class (In ME) and Quarry Hunslet’s ….. I choose the Darjeeling ‘B’ Class … (I also picked up a Hunslette chassis – No cylinders cheaply so will be building that in parallel)

Hi Peter

 

I was just wondering if you had considered building “Sweet Pea” 0-4-0 or the 0-6-0 version called “Metre Maid”. Drawings and castings available from Blackgates.

There is a construction manual available from Tee Publishing called “Build Your Own Steam Locomotive “Sweet Pea” by Jack Buckler. Although it is 5″ gauge it is physically a bit bigger than some other 5″ locos.

Hi Guy’s

Thanks for the reply’s. My preference is to build a scale model of an English type loco with a wheel 0 -6-0 arrangement. I would prefer outside cylinders as there is more detail on show in this layout. The tin ware on a saddle tank looks more complicated than a side tank, so these preferences pointed me in the direction of my selected options
