      Hi all

Got myself a 60mm Sandvik Coromant indexable face mill from ebay but am not sure what rpm to run it at in my mill

Same issue with slitting saws – what speed should I run them at? After almost blunting one after it got very hot I need to know how to avoid this in the future!

      regards John

          Depends what material you’re cutting.

Speeds for HSS tooling at 60mm:

          Steel & Cast Iron 70rpm
          Brass/ Bronze/Free Cutting Steel 160 rpm
          Aluminium 240 rpm.

Insert tools you can generally run faster.

            Hi John,

High speed steel slitting saws can get hot quickly, with the exception of cast iron I would always run them wet. Flood with wetable oil for steel, and a continuous spray of kerosene for aluminium and copper alloys.

As for speed high speed steel cutting mild steel should have a tooth speed of no more than 100 feet per minute, harder steels and cast iron perhaps half that speed, copper alloys probably a little faster than 100 fpm., and aluminium perhaps 200 fpm.

If as I suspect your face mill has tungsten carbide cutters, then they will probably “like” to be run a lot faster (perhaps up to 10 times faster ), and you may not notice any difference between running them wet and dry.

            Good luck, and happy milling.

            Peter.

John, I’v got Arnold Thorp’s book “Vertical Milling in the Home Workshop” . For a 2 1/2″ HSS slitting saw; Mild steel 55rpm
              Brass 95rpm
              light alloy 155rpm
these speedsare lower than you’ll find in a lot of places, but are suggested for long life of tools. for cast iron , and harder steels you want slower speed, or smaller saw.
As far as the face cutter goes I’ll tell you what I was told by an “expert”told me when I bought mine—“Just give it about 2 mm depth of cut, 900rpm, and crank like hell”, well I halve both those figures, and don’t crank quite that fast, it works OK for me, actually I think the usual speed I use is 520 rpm.   Ian S C
