        20190524_112542.jpg20190524_112403.jpg20190524_112429.jpgGentlemen,

Had a wander up into the clock tower at Wentworth woodhouse, quite a climb up a steep ladder and shooing pigeons as I went.

The clock hasn't run for some time but looks in good condition, apart from the weight wires and pulleys which are rusty.

I'd love to hear a bit about the clock if anyone can tell me anything about it. There are two bells by the way and two faces.

            Thanks Russell ,

Zapped off an email to them to see if they hold records, this clock is in the stable block built in 1789 so I'm not sure if the clock is contemporary with that date.

            Regards Mick

I know nothing about this particular clock, but Potts of Leeds was one of the major manufacturers … subsumed into Smith of Derby, but trading under its own name for quite a while.

Smith of Derby will almost certainly have whatever records remain. **LINK**

Apparently Potts only set up in 1833 so a bit late for the building of the stables in 1789.

I'll have to brave the pigeons again and look for any other plates.

There is another clock on the main house which has run in recent memory and on another tower is an indicating wind vane, I.e. it shows the wind direction on a dial lower down the tower.

Apparently there is a boiler in the cellars which is identical to Titanics boilers. Cant wait to have a look at that.

Are you intending taking on the clock once you've sorted the doors? smiley

                    .

                    yes

Looking at some of the photos on the web, it appears that there are two clock dials and two sundials

… it would be interesting to know if there were originally four sundials

Currently clock dial facing into the centre of the stable yard and one facing the entrance road. Sundials on the other faces I believe.

Goodness I'd love to clean it but it's well out of my league, I do not think I will have finished the doors anytime soon.
