i have re thought thing and am still thinking about a ball lead screw for the Z axis. The would mainly to make the up/down of the head easier

We-e-ell … see previous comments about back-driving with ballscrews.

90 degrees now, so question might be how much when you got it? (and was it new?). 360 degrees will be point of failure. smiley

Previously we were discussing ballscrews in relation to the X and Y axes. Here you had moved on to the Z-axis. If the ballscrews back-drive on the Z-axis, the head will sink down the column any time the head isn't locked (or held on the raise/lower handle)

Mostly, people mill with the head locked so it might be possible to work this way. Whether it's worth it though …..

              Ok guys sorry.

since the orginional post i did a full check and adjustment of the x and y axis and they are now much better so decided not to pursue ball screws.

i am looking at the z axis not from a back lash point of view rather for smoothness and less friction and now understand drawback to ball screws hence why i asked if there was anything better than that std warco setup

People have done this with a cable/pulley counterbalance system. With the counterbalance weight suspended behind the machine.

                Or a gas strut helps.

Mine already has a gas strut inside the column. Its more the help the stepper motor
