Vertical bandsaw

Can anybody recommend a vertical band saw, capable of cutting 3mm steel plate, I have space available for a small floor mounted saw hopefully single phase ?

Startrite Bandit if you can find one. May need a motor change and VFD to slow it down.

I have cut 3mm vertically on my Clarke bandsaw. The table is flimsy, but a band saw is not a precision tool.

I have a small Proxon bandsaw and have successfully cut 1/2" X 2" brass and 1/2" X 1/2" steel.

I have got away with doing this on a Record 350 at it's low speed (380 metres/minute), which is still 3-4 times faster than recommended for steel. That was using a bimetal blade with M42 teeth though – they can run hot without losing temper. I expect that would have cooked a carbon steel blade. I guess you need to be more detailed about what you're doing to get specific advice – is the saw going to be used exclusively for cutting steel, what sort of usage etc..

The small horizontal metal cutting bandsaws can be easily adapted to cut in a vertical position with the addition of a horizontal table. (something that I have to do). Do a Google search for designs.

My little bandsaw will cut 65×12 steel bar in 1 minute. 90 diameter in 2 minutes. 3mm steel plate is no problem.

@ Paul Lousick Exactly the same saw I have. I was thinking of doing the vertical mod to mine. I think this is the straightest cutting band saw I have ever used.

I recall seeing a post on (maybe) this site where the owner of one of these saws made a larger table for when the saw is used vertically which simply clips onto the small table normally provided. You can buy a table for the Femi saws which are similar to Paul's or copy that to make your own. I too have yet to get round to making one for mine!

The only downside to using a horizontal saw in vertical mode is that the throat depth is quite small compared to a vertical so may not be able to cut the width of sheet the OP wants.

JasonB makes a good point about the available throat depth.

I have an ancient Warco 6 x 4 and have occasionally used it in vertical mode with reasonable success. Handfeeding thin material may be problematic, however, if the blade is too coarse.

My machine seems to be intended for 1/2" wide blades only which limits its ability to cut small radius curves.

A nice little saw which has given me great pleasure.

I bought from a supplier in Loughborough who has a showroom there where I saw it with my very own eyes before purchase. No connection but gave good service : **LINK**  Note: More expensive from the same supplier on eBay.

Never looked back. Not as cheap as some, but nicely made, especially compared to the Warco vertical (cheaper) and the other variants of the same thing.

Depends what you want to use it for though!
