Trying to identify a collet by its size.

Length – 54.12mm
Largest diameter- 31.78mm
Smallest diameter (at base) – 25.65mm
Diameter around inner top – 22.23mm

That looks like an inserted tip face mill with an R8 shank to me.

R8 is about 100mm long.

Does look more like a cutter than a collet though

It is a cutter in the photo. I need to identify what it is in terms of what collet would fit my milling machine.

Its a taylor and was sold with various options.

I am aware that this is a cutter but its all i got with the machine and i need collets to make it useable.

I suppose it would be more accurate to see if anyone can identify the taper…..i guess.

This is what lathes.co.uk has on it….a bit vague.

While very early versions of the Mk. 1 had plain bearings fitted to both the main spindle and the various jockey pulleys and countershaft later models had ball races throughout leading to much easier running and far less power loss. It is almost certain that the miller would have been offered with a variety of spindle nose fittings and examples have been found with a No. 2 Morse, Brown & Sharpe and Jarno tapers – and also, incredibly, a plain bore. Almost certainly in line with the change to anti-friction bearings the spindle was further modified with a 26? taper to accept direct-mounting “double-split” collets of a type not dissimilar to the modern “ER” type. When the Mk. 2 was introduced at some point in the 1930s a change was made to a lower bronze bearing and an upper ball race.

I have uploaded a chart which shows…….if i am measuring things correctly…..that its close to a number 10 jarno and possibly a brown and sharpe. But the length does not match up.

There are pictuees of the appropriate collets on both pages 1and 2.

It appears that the cutter picture you have supplied fits directly to the mill, with a drawbar? As the lathes dot co report states it looks like the Mkll mill used split collets with drawbar, but the same taper as on your cutter?

So is your machine a Mkl or Mkll?

But yes the cutter fits to the mill using a draw bar..

I see. Yes the 4 collets almost certainly dont fit mine.

The two in the clips in the doorseem to be what i am trying to identify.

Well, this thread has to win a prize for the most difficult to figure out the question that is being asked!

That taper is almost certainly obsolete – virtually every collet uses a 10 to 16 degree taper, and yours are 23 degree according to Lathes.co.uk.

Hardinge are the biggest supplier of collets, I would ask them

I suspect your ultimate answer is for someone to make you a spindle matched to the milling cutter you have, with an ER type chuck fitting.
