Turning tool inserts

I have been trying to understand the purpose of the various tool inserts for ssome time. I heard a teach-in by a rep. from one of the tool manufacturers a few years ago explaining the selection of tips for specific jobs on horizontal boring machines.

I never have had an opportuniy to understand the use of these and the appropriate settings. Today I have found what I need, and more, on the Sandvik site. I know that some working in industry will have access to their catalogue which may contain this information but I don't have that access.

Hello Jerry – I agree, the SANDVIK cat is very informative and must be very helpful to folk at the front line of manufacturing. However, I am just a cheapskate old make do and mender so having purchased this job lot of tips at a recent car boot sale for 80p

I made a 12mm shanked tool to hold them.

I didn't have to machine a retaining screw as there was one in one of the plastic cases. These tips are meant for finishing but they rip through metal with little effort and give a great finish when I need it. There are 18 SUMITOMO tips in total in the 2 cases and I calculate that I'll never need to buy another tip in my lifetime.
