I am building a Torquay Manor Tender using the drawings in the ME. I am working on the brakes but it seems as if the measurements for the brake cross beams are incorrect. Can anyone help?

I have just put a set of calipers across the outsides of the rear brake hanger brackets of my TM tender and at 5.61 inches it more or less matches the theoretical measurement in the TM drawings. It's over 20 years since I made the components & I remember it being a bit of a fiddle to fit freely.

Where exactly is the problem? Do the hangers not hang vertically to fit the lateral measurement?

            Hello Richard

The problem is that the brake connecting rods are not far enough inside as they are fouling the wheels. I keep rechecking but cannot see where I am going wrong.

I agree there must be an error in the drawing.

I'm working from the dimensions shown on page 1012 of issue 3475 of ME Vol 139 from 1973.

The inside dimension for the distance between the brake pull rods for the middle and rear cross shafts is shown as 5.075 less 2 x 0.127 (the width of the cross shafts plus a couple of thou). This works out at 4.821.

Measuring the same dimension on my tender the same distance is around 4.160. My pull rods fit between the wheels ok. The clearance is adequate, but less than generous. To have them as the drawing suggests must be wrong. I don't specifically recall this being wrong as it was so long ago I put it together and it is lost in the mists of time amongst so many other glitches and workarounds.

As long as the brake gear fits together and looks about right it is fortunately one of the less than critical issues to grapple with amongst the many for TM.

              Hope that assists.

Thanks for taking all that trouble. I think I will just modify the measurements, as you say as long as they look about right. It is quite difficult working from Martin Evans' description as he seems to have missed a number of items and measurements. It would probably be best to work from the drawings but as I am only making the tender, I was given most of the bits to make it and don't want to start on the engine, so £87 for a complete set of drawings doesn't appeal to me.

                Best wishes

                Brian
