I have got to the stage with my 5 inch gauge Manor where I am thinking about injectors. All the various model engineering books I have to hand provide a description of how injectors work etc, but none cut to the chase and give me the practical information I need as to appropriate size/capacity and horizontal v vertical.

Searching the Internet I still cannot find answers to all my questions. I have got as far as deciding to order injectors of Chiverton design from the relevant supplier. Also, that I need a copy of DAG Brown's book on miniature injectors. I plan to install twin injectors (to accompany the crosshead pump & tender hand pump as per Martin Evans' plans). And I can see an argument for injectors of differing sizes.

Having got this far, things start to get hazier. My best guess from the sparse wisdom I have managed to find is maybe a 16oz and a 24oz would be appropriate for a locomotive of this size. But horizontal or vertical is still a complete mystery.

Any advice on any of the above very welcome please.

          hi ricky,

personally i would have 2 x 24 or 26 oz per min horizontal injectors ('medium' standard size). i would make sure you have a 3rd as a spare. alternatively 2 plus a spare of 18 or 16 oz per min horizontal size.

there is something to be said for having a standard size with the same pipe connections.

horizontal injectors are easier to clean and you can see if any muck is trapped between the two halves of the combining cone. you cannot see this on a vertical injector. additionally on the Chiverton type of vertical injector now made by Len Steel the delivery cone cannot be removed for cleaning.

order from Paviersteam well in advance as there is quite a waiting list. usual disclaimer.

          cheers,

          julian

            Many thanks Julian.

I will get my order in and read DAG's book in the meantime.

            Cheers.
