I haven't got a Myford but I have seen several sources (e.g. Eccentric Engineering) quote the standard tool size for the ML7/S7 as 8mm or 5/16". I can't see any reason to use heavier tooling unless you happen to have it already or have found a very good deal.

The blue-painted tipped tool in the photo should have an easily machined shank that can be reduced to allow use in a standard turret.

When I made my QCTP I relieved the centre of the base and it locks rock solid with moderate clamping force

          Phil,

I`ve been watching this post since you started it & not said a word until now when you have posted a pic of your set up. I`ve just been out & measured my Myford 4 way tool post Myford Pt No 1410. Gap for tool is 1/2 inch deep, thickness of bottom plate (tool support) is 5/16th inch Top plate is 1/2 inch deep & tool holding allen screws are 5/16th BSF. Your 4 way looks if you`ll forgive me "kinda pathetic" in comparison so I`d say it is NOT an original Myford item. I regularly use 1/4", 3/8" & 1/2" HSS bits with packing as required. As I also have some 5/8" tools which I use with the 4 way removed & held by the original elephants foot mounting. When I do use the 5/8th tools the ratchet is still in place & Gray you are quite right when you say the leading hole for the ratchet (towards the chuck) is on the centre line of the top slide.

          Regards Alan

            Hi Alan,

You're right – mine is smaller. Dimensions are:

            Base thickness 9/32"

            Top thickness 3/8"

            Gap 7/16"

            Screws 3/16"

Any chance you could post a pic of what yours looks like. Mine came in a genuine Myford accessory box. I spoke to RDG and they said they acquired all this stock from Myford and simply transferred it on to their shelves.

            Thanks

            Phil

That must mean the base on your 4 way is 9/32 thick then as any thicker would put the 3/8 tools higher then centre line? Having said that my blue tools are a geniune 10mm thick, plus a bit of paint thickness and they measure at 10.1mm so a good 0.5mm thicker than a 3/8" tool.

                Hi There

I had to face the bottom off of my cheapo 4 way tool post.

Worked a treat for 3/8 inch then.

                regards David

                  Hi Phil,
There is no way you should be able to move the tool post by hand when tightend down. Are you sure that the conical shaped spacer is not in contact with the shoulder at the end of the thread. Try putting a large washer (Larger than the diameter of the bottom of the conical spacer.) under the conical spacer. The hole in the washer must clear the unthreaded part of the hold down stud. See Michael Williams comment about the lack of any marks on the top of the toolpost due to the clamping force. Also make sure that the bottom face of the tool post is not convex. Ideally the clamping force should be at the outer edge of the toolpost. Make sure there is not a radius on the bottom of the stud which contacts the hole in the tool post before the before the bottom face contacts the topslide.

                  Les.

All checked and look good – in fact there was no mark on the top as that was a photo I took early – when I got the toolpost new out of the box. Since then I've given everything a good clean and tightened down really tight and to be fair it does seem solid. I'll keep an eye on it cheers.
