This is a bit of fun, an web page that allows you to superimpose the ship anywhere on a world map to get the sheer scale **LINK**

I’ve seen a report on another site that it has been freed and is moving at 5knots towards the Great Bitter Lakes (presumably this will allow it to be overtaken whilst being checked out)

Ships in the canal only travel at about 5 knots, otherwise the wash would destroy the banks of the canal, hence why it takes nearly a day to transit the length of the canal. Dave W

Has anyone any idea of the sort of charge to transit the Suez Canal? With 20,000 containers on it what sort of price for each? £5 makes it £100k. £50 makes it £1m

I wonder is the Captain reading "Situations Vacant" ?cheeky

I assume that, just as when entering ports worldwide, the ship is under the command of the local pilots, who instruct the ship's crew..

I thought there was a parallel canal to the original one, if so why did the stranded ship cause a problem?

The southern section below the lakes only has one channel. North of the lakes there are two channels.

Bill – explained above – the parallel canal doesn’t cover the full canal – the Ever Given choose the non-paralleled bit to plough into both banks.

Putting some figures into here seem to suggest about 13,500 $ which doesn’t seem bad so less than a $ per container

In my merchant navy days the ships captain was always responsible for the ship the pilot was there for advice. The only exception was the Panama Canal. But that was the 1970,s

One news report said typical charge to use the canal is $300,000 per ship.

That would tie in with the the figures Michael Gilligan posted saying Egypt is losing $15 million a day in revenue. That would equal roughly 50 ships a day at about $300,000 each. Nice work if you can get it.

With 20,000 containers on board the Evergreen ship, that would work out about $15 per container.

Or less than 10 cents per mini lathe.

Its not untypical for a single shipping container transit cost from China to UK to cost approx $5,000 one way (assuming 50 lathes, thats a mere $100/lathe)

So 20,000 containers = $100 million revenue for Evergreen

Think I might sell my house and buy me a container ship wink 2

Evergreen did not even do that, apparently. They lease the ships off the builders. Probably still cost more than the average house though!

possibly held until the financial cost of recovery and damage to canal is paid ? though there might be damage to bow or rudder as both were caught in the canal banks

My daughter-in-law's dad, who worked as a container ship's master, told me the problem that gave him nightmares was re-establishing manual control. The ships are so heavily computerised that this can take half a day. The process of entering port was in many cases software-controlled, and he lived in fear of someone having built a new jetty across the approach route to berth since the last software update installation.

He also said that the person in the worst case with the Ever Given was the master of the ship following it. >

In the paper yesterday the Egyptian authorities want $1Billon before they will release the ship.

So that will make the lathes a bit more expensive!
