I have tracked down one each of these. In terms of price, condition, proximity they are comparable. The Type D comes with fonts, circular font table, chuck mount, and a Javelin. The CX with “accessories” (unconfirmed)

Is there any reason to prefer one to the other?

Intended use is engraving (brass and steel; dials/faces and decoration in the main), clock scale horology (crossing out mainly), cutting em/debossing/branding stamps for use on paper/leather/wood/hot steel in a fly press. I might get into some reduction pattern making, and even further on I might try my hand at optical graticules – but those are not really considerations at the moment.

I already have a GHA mill, 9″ rotary table, dividing head, D-bit grinder, and 3D printer – so accessories and fonts are less of a factor in pushing me one way or the other

I would go for the machine with the least shake on the pantograph, any play there will be obvious in use and result in poor lines. You also need to consider the condition of the spindle and collet seating, this is running at 18,000 rpm max on most of the TH machines.

The Javelin device is very useful to have and would serve you well with the steel engraving/marking, especially if you need to mark ID on HSS tooling.

I second emgee’s advice … but would probably put more emphasis on the condition of the spindle.

It is beautifully crafted, but in practical terms, almost unrepairable by mere mortals.

Thanks both. I already have 364088 in my downloads to peruse.

One machine comes out of the private workshop of a former Hornby Hobbies toolmaker, one is of unknown provenance. I have asked both sellers re pantograph shame and spindle runout.

Can one still get the styli for the Javelin? I don’t see the engraving bits on ebay very often now – anyone made their own and know what the taper is officially rather than me trying to measure it?

                  Hi Bazyle

I have a few HSS cutters from my now sold Model K spindle cutter adaptor, not sure they will be what you want but if you give some approx dimensions I can compare, if they are the ones I can post 1 to you if you PM me your address.

Whilst it doesn’t answer your specific question, Bazyle … you might find this of interest:
