table support bar on elliot 10m shaper

Hi

excuse me if this sounds a really daft question.

I want to square off a 2 inch square block on my shaper

so will only be taking light cuts using the auto feed

do I have to use the table support bar or would it be ok to

leave the table support bar disengaged and only use it for more heavier work

If you square off your 2" block without the table support you may find that the block ends up anything but square.

As the tool advances along the work and the ram travels further out from the body of the machine the tendency will be for the table to get forced down resulting in a tapered cut.

As the 10m is designed to cut with a steady you may also risk damaging the machine, especially if you have a "dig in"

Why dont you want to use the support?

I know mine can sometime be sticky to move but nothing that a clout or two with a hide mallet wont cure

It's a bit like a tailstock centre

You can do a lot of jobs without it but a job will always be stiffer whenever you use it

I used the support and everything was fine

I hadn't used it for a long time and couldn't remember

will be using the shaper a lot more now I have achieved a finish

which I would never have achieved on my milling machine

I'am making a QCTP at the moment so will be cutting the dovetails on it

much more economical then using milling cutters

Hi Martin,

Cutting dovetails with a shaper does take a little more work than a mill but much more satisfying and as you quite rightly point out cheaper.

IMHO the shaper can also produce a better finish than a Mill when using a "shear-grind" toolbit and a slow feed (bring on the bottles & stones).
