Can anyone tell me the difference between the Simplex design and the Super Simplex design. Is there any advantages in building the super Simplex. Does anyone have copies of the Model Engineer articles on the Super Simplex. I believe they started in Vol 162

Going to look on ebay to see if I can buy the back issues.

The only real difference is in the cylinder bores – Simplex has 1.5″ bores and Super has 1.5625″ bores. The Super boiler is different in design i.e. the barrel is larger in diameter and the tube layout is different. Martin said that the Super has a larger grate area but actually the grate areas are the same, so the steam raising capacity is probably no different.

There is also the brakes on the super simplex that are not on the simplex and yes the Super Simplex is the one to build.

I have a set plans and book for 5 inch simplex but want instruction book and Plans for a super Simplex.

Does anyone know where they can be purchased please.

I changed my mind on building a standard Simplex after finding so many problems like rods hitting wheels Ect.

I am a novice and prefer to try and build an Engine without sorting problems with the plans

              good Luck

                hi mike,

there are quite a few detailed differences between Simplex and Super Simplex. all are generally known as 'Complex' rather than 'Simplex' in club circles.

IMHO martin evans made a fundamental mistake in increasing the cylinder bore size on Super Simplex. i would stick with the Simplex bore size with the rest of the loco being as per Super Simplex, and also add a top feed to the boiler. separate side tanks detachable from the running plates are a big advantage worth incorporating plus a cab that is detachable from the side tanks and rear bunker.

                cheers,

                julian

Hi i have started building my super simplex and have decided to run with a tender.

I spoke with guys from my Rugely Club and been suggested i build a 0.6.2 and run with no coal bunker.

I have tried to find details on the extended frames ect but other than photo's i cannot find information.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please

                    Ron

                      Hi Ron,

An extended 0-6-2 version is described in ME Volume 178, Issues 4041 and 4043 under the title 'Alice'. That gives details for the frame extensions.

Further to the above, Alice is a design for Simplex but you should be able to adapt it to Super.
