Can anyone suggest how to set up endmills and slot drills so that the cutting edges are square to the grinding wheel?

I suppose it could be done by eye but there must be a better way.

Use a height gauge to find height then half the diameter down. Put edge of cutter on that height. Also look at

From what I could work out on how he set the cutter perpendicular to one of the long edges, you could use the little optical aid that I made a while back, here shown in use setting a cutter in an "Acute" tool holder.

It's basically a rectangle or perspex bolted to the face of a short length of key steel, after having lines scribed on it at right angles to each other at appropriate places. You hold it against the end face of the cutter and align the edges of the latter to the appropriate lines. The eye is very sensitive to alignment of lines so it can be very accurate, using a magnifier if necessary.

Surely he's right Neil, at least about some of us!

Anyway, very grateful for the suggestions, all I need to do now is try it; my Union T&C grinder is all set up with my Stevenson fixture complete with one of the ER32 collets that Santa brought, now to have a grind.

Well maybe, but not the ones who work at 12" to the foot though

The video was quite good but confused by the use of a high helix 3 flute cutter. It would have been much more helpful if he had stuck with the 2 flute conventional slot drill.

Even so, I've managed to sharpen a 2 flute slot drill satisfactorily, not bad for the first time.
