      Why check valves

        I notice on LBSC's drawings that there are 2 check valves for cylinder lubrication. One is on the lubricator and the second is in a "T" fitting which goes to the cylinder steam pipes. Is this 'normal' practice or 'over kill" ?

          Hi Bob

          I have built LBSC`S 31/2" Black 5 Doris and it has the same one in the oil pump and one in the tee for the cylinder feeds, I think you would getaway with just the one in the pump but I went with the drawings.

            Thanks for the reply Stan, I have also looked in Martin Evans's book where he states 2 check valves. I just wonder if you don't have a valve near to the steam pipes, then steam could condensate in the oil delivery pipes a bit like a displacement lubricator, but oil would eventually be delivered.
            I would still like to know the reason why ?

              IMO it is because getting non return valves to work properly with steam oil – and remember it should be warmed before being pumped – is a nightmare!

                Thanks Fizzy. You say "warmed" before pumped, there is no provision for this on SPEEDY, but the pipes do pass thro the smokebox after pumping. Do you reckon that that was sufficient?
