Hi Guys

A few years ago I had a series of Mini strokes. I got off quite lightly with them, but one of the really anyoing thing they left me with is unsteady hands. When I try to silver solder, the end of the rod looks more like I'm conducting an Orchestra rather than soldering. Ive seen a shield that the solder pokes through to let you get nearer to the job. I made one of these but it didnt help. Does anyone know of something else I could make / buy that would help ? as you can imagine the solder goes everywhere except where its wanted and with the price of silver solder each joint is quite expensive. I think I clean more of it off than I actually use for the joint lol.

You could try cutting off a suitably sized piece or two of solder and placing on the joint. then just heat and the pallions of solder will flow when the temperature is right. Just take it easy with the initial heating as the bubbles from wet solder can displace the pallions.

Hi Dave ,

Artists and sign painters use a Mahl stick for a very similar purpose .

Adapted for silver soldering this would be a long stiff rod fitted on an adjustable pole stand with a heavy base .

I'll try both suggestions. Jason. I have tried your method in the past, but the problem I found was keeping the solder in place and getting it to run just where I wanted it to go.

MikeW I like your suggestion, it's prompted me to think of something like a rod rest used in fishing with a heavy base an old crutch that clamps to an arm would be ideal
