Smoothing a Cast Iron Wheel

I am dealing with a cast Flywheel, there are on it 6 spokes. Does anyone have any brilliant ideas as to how to shape and smooth these other than patiencec and a file, or several files.

I have very successfully used a Dremel type drill with various abrasive wheels and diamond burrs on model locomotive wheels (10 wheels with many spokes). However, with just six spokes, I would imagine that a couple of hours with a few hand files would sort a flywheel out. Maybe a couple of strips of emery cloth too.

Hand files work for me to get rid of any flash and any steps where the two halves don't quite line up. I do often follow that up with a Dremel with grinding bit in it to take off any excess roughness left from the sand

Same as Jason. Files, Dremel and a smear of Isopon P40 after wiping with acetone for any low points or places where I have got over enthusiastic with the first two.

A quick dusting flick over with spray primer will easily reveal any areas you may have missed that need further attention.

I resorted to a diamond file for a hard wheel, only took a couple of hours to clean it up.

Yes it is as I thoght a case of Patience, Patience, Patience….I am better at that than I am with the tools !!

In the past I had to finish the surface of some stainless rings formed from round bar, I used home made sanding belts from sheet abrasive, you have to glue them together in-situ around the part with the abrasive on the inside. I drove them with an expanding rubber Dremel drum sanding mandrel with a plastic washer on each end to stop the belt slipping off and the drum tightened enough to give a crowned pulley shape to help belt location.
