I have some small dia end mills up to 6mm with a hole in the middle, what are they used for. If they were slot drills or the three edged cutters they are used for slots etc, but these end mills cant be used for this. A stupid question this must seem to experienced model makers, but if I'm milling a edge I would use a larger dia for rigidity.

          Hi Alfie,

          May be this thread explains?

If I don't have a slot drill matching the slot width I want to cut, I start with an undersize slot drill and then uses an end mill to widen the slot to the correct dimension. For a narrow slot you would need an end mill with a diameter slightly less than the width of the slot.

Any chance of a photo? I wonder if they might be counterbores rather than end-mills?

If the hole goes all the way through they may be for a CNC machine with through spindle coolant.

If there is one with a 1.5mm hole & 7mm OD, I want to know where to get them… I've come close to having end mills spark eroded to make them like that.

                Regards,

                Richard.

I have some non center cutting end mills that have a small recess in the end. They can be used to cut blind keyways or slots if the mill is gradually ramped down to full depth. It is not ideal, but it works.
