There are several books that will help as it could be a time consuming issue. Model Locomotive Valve Gears by Martin Evans – The last chapter covers what you may need. I expect some one will be along soon with more practical help. Good luck Noel.

Silvercrest have a technical section on their site, setting valve timing is the top item.
