Had the mill a few months now and it’s a great piece of kit. Only downside, and it’s my own inability not the machine fault but I’m continuously getting lost with the dials on the handles, so I want to invest in a DRO set for all x,y,z directions I also struggle reading the small in built quill dro.

Ive spent the day dro hunting but there’s that many I’m not sure which to get, also easy of fitting would have to be a consideration.

      Thanks

      Andy

Not looked but I expect there are threads on this if you do a search of the forum. Alternatively, the machine suppliers will know (and likely able to supply) suitable kit. Arceuro supply Sieg machines, amongst others.

Then there is Allendale, who advertise on the forum (top of the page at present).

What is your budget? Are you limited to the basic scales and readout or can you stretch to a multi function consol and glass/magnetic scales and read heads.

I have fitted a set of magnetic scales from Allendale (M-DRO) and they are excellent.

As mentioned by Jason, you need to set a buget first as there's a wide variation in price range. Just as an idea, a 3 axis magnetc scales kit for a mill your size would cost around £450.

I got quotes from EMSi, they were very helpful and will tell you what you'd need for your mill…unfortunately shipping killed the deal as I had to export, so I built my own.

                  Hi Andy,

If you want a good magnetic scales system, Machine DRO – Allendale are the people to ask.

If you can wait for about two months, I think they will have a kit which will be machine specific.

For a 3-axis (5 micron resolution) kit from them include custom brackets, all bolts and full colour install guide, you will probably have to budget for £550.00 to £600.00 Inc.vat.

Andy, if you look at the thread 'Mill DRO – How many axis?' started June 2019 (sorry not sure how to add a link) you will find I added a 4 axis DRO to my SX2.7. Bought from EMS who were very helpful. The fourth axis on the Quill is great and so much easier to read than the little readout that came with the mill.

Thank you for the replies folks, budget wise I’m a firm believer in “buy once cry once” so I don’t mind spending to get a good product.
If I’m honest Its the fitting and set up that has me more concerned, I like the suggestion Ketan makes for a machine specific dro which would make fitting simpler?

                      Thanks

Good video on Youtube by DROPros showing features of the better models.

Hopefully yes. ARC is lending them one of each of the following machines: SX2.7, SX2.7L, SX3 and SX3.5ZP, which they will get in the middle of next week. They will use them to make the kits.

Once the kits are made and fitted to those machines, we will sell off those specific machines. There after ARC will direct potential buyers directly to M-DRO. At present we do not intend to sell their kits, nor do we want any re-directing commission. As they are, the kits can be perceived to be expensive for model engineers, but are reasonable according to industry use.

As ARC has no intentions to make/sell magnetic scale kits at present, our idea is to direct people to a reputable U.K. supplier who can assist. There are other good U.K. suppliers all of whom can probably assist in their own way.

                          Ketan at ARC.
