A friend has been given a Chester machine tools, Conquest Mill Super.  has anyone any information on this mill as I believe it is discontinued and the original gear for the spindle drive is a plastic but smashed gear. I could make one but if anyone could help with a replacement I would be most grateful. I wondered if this mill could have been used by other retailers with a different badge on as there is no handbook with this mill so no part numbers etc.

        hello David,

if you friend could send a photo of the gear in question, we might be able to help.

It looks like a version of the generic “X2” mill so should be spares around.  Alternatively I think there are belt drive kits which make it more robust and quieter.

There have been discussions of this issue in the past. Finding those threads and spending five seconds looking at them would tell you if the machine is the same as your own or not. Even if the machine is not identical, the solution used might bive you ideas.

Including a picture of the machine would assist.

              Have you tried contacting Chester?

They list 2 gears for the ‘Conquest super mill’ as spare parts.

              Link below:

They have a manual as well, if it is the same machine:

These are the pictures of the gears I have not got any other information yet and the part numbers are not in the parts list in the handbook. He has talked to Chester but without more information he is stuck. I think I will have to ask him to send them to me to check sizes and tooth count etc.

I can’t see the gear to which Stuart has linked, but this one from Amadeal looks very similar to the broken one that David has shown.  As far as I can estimate, the gear tooth counts are the same and these gears were common to a lot of mills and mini lathes produced around the same time, designed apparently to destroy themselves when stressed to protect the rest of the transmission.

ARC do a 12/20 in metal as well as the original plastic, just check the bores are the same if you want to go for spmething stronger.

Thanks for all the help. Chester Machine tools have come up with a new replacement pair. He bought them over this morning for me to check them and  luckily he did as the main gear shaft was over size by 0,025 and he was going to press it on and would possibly split the plastic gear. After a scrape and pollish on the inside  of the gear it was a tight push fit.

At that price, it would be a good idea to get a spare. The nylon will run quieter and act as a safety link in the event of a crash.
