      No , I wasn't triumphant ( because I was clueless about such devices anyway ) , only mentioned it Because there had been some speculation. It's good to know these things because my last experience of anything cotter was getting the pedals off my bike when I was about 8, – I remember mangling them and thinking 'I haven't done that very well …

      Just wrestling with how to take a few thou off the diameter whist maintaining a nice finish ( apart from the file stroke which I also don't know how to do. Looks tricky to hold on the lathe without marring the surface.

        It might be easier to clean the hole out very thoroughly, and then if-needs-be, open it out a touch with emery paper on a wooden dowel.

          The file stroke thing….
          Just a single stroke to add an air bleed to cotter if it fits “too” well in the blind hole..you will know if too good ..when cotter feels “springy” in the blind hole. .
          A stroke. .smallest cut ..to provide a simple flat..air..leak..letting air in.
