regulator valve

I am just on the point of machining the valve and gland for my 2 inch traction engine . Does the valve need to be a tight fit over the rising steam hole ? the plan is a bit vague on the fit needed , surely the steam pressure will tend to force it off the seat when its closed and there is no pressure in the chamber ,Or am I missing something ?

What traction engien is it?

Usually the steam passes around/through the cylinder and up into the regulator chest, this holds the valve down onto the passage that links reg chest to valve chest.

Ah, so I have it wrong then, the steam is already in the regulator chamber and its the opening into the slide valve chests that is uncovered . I was thinking that the valve uncovered the opening from the boiler . It's ransom simms and Jefferies 2 cylinder

That's it the drilling up from the boiler is not covered so the reg chest is under pressure ( also the safety valve and whistle) then the valve controls the flow out of that chest into the shorter drilling that branches off to the valve chests.

yes its obvious when someone points its it out to you , Trouble is the plan I have is drawn by someone who knows what they are doing for someone who also knows , All the parts are there but not how they go together , Still its coming together slowly . Thanks for the help
