Just received my copy of the magazine here in Canada and noticed the article on page 52 by Neil Wyatt about building a QCTP. Towards the end he muses about making a Tangential tool holder.

A few years ago I received a challenge from a fellow Model Club member, "bet you can't make a tangential tool holder". Well, he shouldn't have said that!

The photos in my album "Tangential Tool holder" show the holder I made to fit an A2Z QCTP. The tool bit is 3/16".

Photo A is of the holder and B shows a bottom view. Photo C shows it mounted on my now departed 920 lathe and photo D shows it alongside a Diamond tool holder mounted on an AXA size toolholder.

If you look closely at the shot taken of the bottom of the tool holder, you can see that I cheated by soft soldering a square hole tube in place at the correct angle. I then machined away the sides and ends.

Works very well but I did have the benefit of being able to copy it. Working out all the compound angles was fun.

          Hi Geoff,

That's a very nice job. I like the idea of a split block to avoid using a separate clamp piece. You have used a much larger toolbit angle than I have. I think that in future I will follow your example.

I've made my QCTP toolholder. In fact it is rather different from the sketch, but I dropped the clamp piece and haven't got round to making a replacement yet!

My ordinary tangential tool (below, more pics in album) works well – the angles were all done aiming for about 7 degrees of clearance front and side to allow facing and left hand cutting without moving the tool.
