That is a beautifully executed project and I am in awe of the design and quality of manufacture.

In the article text (page 228) he mentions 'combined needle and angular contact' bearings for the spindle. They are not something I have ever come across, what would they be?

      Ian,

      Wonderful, isn't it …

Back in 2006, when the article was published in HJ, I wrote to Malcolm Wild; asking about the bearings.

The needle bearings are: NKIA 59/22 and there are various sizes in the range.

Interesting/unusual bearings and I am not sure what the real advantage is. I suppose though that they tolerate high radial load for a slim bearing. I have always regarded needle roller bearings as having some unavoidable radial clearance so not the best choice in machine spindles.

I read your posting before you edited it (saw it on my Android phone) but sussed out that what he said was actually what Ihad understood from the article. I would like to know more about the spindle arrangement to see whether the preload was by springs or rigid adjustment.

          Ian,

Yes … that can be an awkward feature of this forum !

Now: For the benefit of those who did NOT read my posting before the edit

I started trying to highlight the fact that the specified bearings are a combination of a needle roller bearing and an angular contact bearing, together in one package.

i.e. as distinct from 'combined needle and angular contact' … which I thought was maybe ambiguous.

On reflection, I decided that the picture said it all; so I removed the comment.

For anyone impressed by the F1 …

It's worth having a look at this thread, on another forum.
