Problem is you will probably get an industrial standard from google, for model work the sizes are different so that teh ring is compressed less which makes for an engine that turns over more easily.

 

Assuming you want the groove in a piston then groove depth is 0.132" and width 0.166" wide.

SAE would be 0.124" deep and 0.188" wide which makes things a lot tighter but is meant for pressures upto 1500psi

What is the o ring being used for, is it static or dynamic, pressure, operating medium.

Also you need to keep clearances as tight as possible to stop the O ring being extruded into the gap. If it is being used for high pressure you use back up rings.

It's well worth getting a copy of Tubal Cain's Model Engineers Handbook. That gives the appropriate figures for various sizes of O-rings and the ideal profile of the groove for various applications. Lots more useful information as well.

Thanks All for your replies. I am making a model of VICTORIA Steam engine and its my first go A real ham HI HI its coming along nicely building from scratch no casts that way I will learn a lot more . And Russell I will get a copy of Model Engineers Handbook

In that case the sizes I gave will do just fine as I took them out of said book.
