A mate of mine has purchased a very nice condition Myford Super 7 c/w screwcutting gearbox that he gave a widow from Lymm (Nr Warrington) £100 for.

His plan as he is not an engineer is to bolt it to the roof of his canal longboat as an ornament.! – It seems that once it goes rusty and corroded in the elements he will find it more attractive for some deviant reason.

I have told him in no uncertain terms while at the same time half confused and half amused he is a cockwomble and if that is 'his thing' he should really be doing it with something else.

I also told him he should have given the widow more than £100. But as he himself had no idea of it's true worth he just gave her the asking price in good faith. I think the riser blocks it's on are worth more than that.?

I did offer him £200 but being a bit slow on putting the implications together I had earlier in the conversation told him that in that condition on ebay it would probably fetch easily £2K plus.

He didn't bite. And I TBH have no need for a Myford. But I do think it's crying shame that it's destined for such a fate.

I agree, what an awful thing to do with it. There's far better and finer things you can use purposefully as an ornament, but a myford is not one of those!

I think his canal boat needs a little re-engineering with a few holes, that way it can all go rusty together

Tell him to bolt a Super Adept to the ceiling, a S7 will be much more effective as an anchor

In view of the intended fate of this particular lathe would he not be prepared to swop it for one of lesser quality which would actually look the same? Perhaps a cash adjustment of say £150????

What a waste , just think of the widower's husband who would have spent hours tinkering with it and enjoying his time  using the machine , I'd be turning in my grave if I knew that would happen to my equipment .

I'm on the look out for a screw cutting gearbox for a Ml7 as well as a fixed steady as per my wanted add and to read of one going to waste is utter madness .

Whilst this is a waste of a perfectly good lathe please remember one thing, if he has paid the asking price he is now the owner and can do what he likes with it regardless of our views.

Nick, I wonder if you could get him to agree to you ebay-ing it, giving him his original £100 back, then splitting the proceeds three ways: to you as commission, to him as a reward for doing the decent thing, and to the original seller who would probably be delighted?

I used to have a narrowboat, I would have loved to have had a lathe INSIDE the boat!

So the plan now is for Nick to report the barge's movements through the canal system on the forum.

Then legions of local members will buttonhole the proud owner wherever he is and say 'My god that was a £5000 Myford! Which numpty did that to it? Is he bonkers?" After the fifth or sixth such conversation the poor chap will be feeling like the publisher who rejected Harry Potter. And it could go on for years, and years, and years…
