An old 1450rpm 1/4hp induction motor would be ok, if the market for old motors is similar to here, ten pounds should see you right if you have to buy one, I'v got 4 here, and two 1/6hp ones, they just keep turning up. Some motors it would be worth making a cover so that the motor does not get filled with rubbish. Ian S C

I've just rescued one from the tumble drier, a simple VxA calculation suggests about 150 watts. Fitted with a poly-v pulley too.

Also the clockwork timer switch and a relay worth keeping.

Neil, has the motor got a casing around it, or is it like a couple I'v got about that size, just the stator with a skeliton around it to hold the bearings, I suppose when its hidden away inside a dishwasher, there does not need to be too much metal around. Even the old 1/4hp washing machine motors have more holes in the case than a Swiss cheese. All these holes are a bit of a worry with all the bits of swafe flying about. Ian S C

Hi Ian, it's an open frame, I think what is often described as a squirrel cage – wouldn't hold any of our local squirrels for long! Plenty of ways to 'swarf proof' it.

Bugbear, just noticed this resurrection of your old thread. I too have a Simat 101, bought back in the '80s, and am looking to get it up and running again one day soon.

You will probbly have to machine a chuck back plate to suit the lathe spindle then any suitable diameter chuck can be fitted to this backplate.. If you can only justify buying one chuck always go for a 4 jaw independent chuck..

I have looked into making a backplate, and it appears technically "plausible"

However, I can't find any trace of small (enough) chucks that actually use a backplate. All the small-enough 4 jaw independent chucks seem to have a one-piece body.

This is further supported by the fact that the smallest semi-machined backplate I can find is 4" ; even the "tiny" mini-lathes are 7×10 (and up) where the Simat is 4×12 (aka 2×12 in English).

Although… checking the advert the Simat is 5 1/4" in the gap, so a LOW profile chuck could have a large diameter. But "low profile chuck" and "having a back plate" are again contradictory.

My Simat 101 is powered by an AEI 1/4 hp motor, 1425 rpm, probably ex washing machine. I must admit i admit I like the little lathe, it has several very good features, I still use it occasionally although I use my bigger CJ18 most of the time. I bought the Simat brand new several years ago but didn’t use it for some years, before preparing for retirement, and relearning everything I thought I knew.
